UNCRC: 25 Facts on the last 25 Years
The United Nations Convention on Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is the foundation document which kick-started the conversation around dignity and rights of children everywhere in the world.
It called upon nations and state heads across the world to unite and work for the safety and betterment of our children’s lives.
The document was first put together on 20th November 1989. Today, it completes 25 years.
On this occasion we compiled a list have compiled a list 25 features of this milestone document that you should know about.
1. The Convention is the first international instrument of Children’s Rights protection.
2. It states that all children are Equal – No discrimination will be made in the name of class, caste, religion etc.
3. Every child has an inherent right to life.
4. It recognizes that for the full and harmonious development of the child’s personality, they should grow up in a family environment, in an atmosphere of happiness, love and understanding.
5. Both the state and parents/guardians need to look after the best interests of the child.
6. As soon as they are born, the child has the right to name, nationality and as far as possible, the right to know and be loved by their parents.
7. The State is responsible for ensuring every child’s survival, protection and development.
8. The state will combat trafficking, kidnapping and illicit transfer of children.
9. Based on the child’s maturity and development, the views and opinions of the child will be considered in matters related to them.
10. The child has the freedom of thought, conscience and religion.
11. The child has the freedom of expression and information.
12. They child has the right to honor, dignity and privacy
13. The state will take all measures to prevent the child from all forms of mental and physical abuse, exploitation and maltreatment.
14. The state must ensure that a disabled child receives special care.
15. If the child is deprived of him family for some reason, the state will step in to offer care and protection.
16. Children have the right to Education. Primary education is compulsory and free for all.
17. Children must be treated with dignity in schools.
18. The state needs to ensure that children receive the highest quality of health care.
19. No child shall be tortured or subjected to degrading punishment.
20. Every child has the right to be protected from hazardous or harmful work and from economic exploitation.
21. No child shall be deprived of freedom and liberty.
22. In 2002, a new protocol against sexual exploitation of children and child pornography was introduced.
23. The child has the right to access legal aid.
24. 193 countries across the world have become part of the convention.
25. India signed the convention in 1992.
