Happy International Workers’ Day to All…

but especially to Child Rights Karyakartas everywhere

The steadfast didis and resolute bhaiyas are how a child knows and experiences the system and the organizations. They know they are being cared & protected by the system because the didis & bhaiyas stand with them and for them, especially when times are against them.

When a child is in distress, it is the on ground karyakarta who enters the fraught realities of the child. With all their expertise, grace & perseverance and against many odds, they create safe spaces. For the children, communities, organizations and systems they work with, the value of their work is immeasurable. In a year where disdain for the working classes was barely disguised, it feels all the more important to acknowledge, visibilize & celebrate the essential & priceless nature of the karyakarta’s work & skill.
In this special edition, we bring you quick snapshots of the essential work that social workers belonging to child rights organizations across 4 states in India have been doing since the lockdown. The featured organizations are part of ‘The Aarambh India Regional Alliance’ (TARA), a national network of on-ground karyakartas.

As we were compiling it, we realized that almost everyone was wearing green. This was inadvertently turning out to be a Childline (1098) appreciation newsletter. Many of the TARA members are Childline karyakartas. The manner in which they have kept their systems live & responsive even in the remotest of districts is deserving of immense appreciation and gratitude.

We also doff our hat to the didis at our mothership Prerana who have been truly inspiring and our own in-house team for being ever so determined and so very fantastic.

The Team running Prerana’s Children’s Home

Prerana has been serially documenting impressions of on-ground work in red light areas in the insightful Çovid Stories. We recommend starting with this short entry – When one phone connects many

The absolute beating heart of aarambh

A reminder again that our donation page to help families of child victims of sexual abuse survive in lockdown is still accepting funds. We appeal to you to donate or just share it with someone who may be interested in donating.
