#Quote of the Week:

“She looked out the window; in her eyes was the light that you see only in children arriving at a new place, or in young people still open to new influences, still curious about the world because they have not yet been scarred by life.”

― Orhan Pamuk, The Museum of Innocence

How NOT to report on child sexual abuse: An 11-year-old boy does not “have sex with” his adult babysitter.

Abusing children is not “having sex”. Reporting on Child Sexual Abuse has frequently been a minefield of egregious bad taste. And more so, if a victim is a male child, the language and terms used can be purple to the point of pornography. The above article examines the offensive, faulty and outdated terminology that continues to be used to describve sexual violence.

New Additions to Our Research Page

Two new fascinating studies now feature on our research page:

1) Rahat‘s illuminating Pursuing This Thing Called ‘Justice’ which follows through on 644 cases of sexual violence registered with the Mumbai Police since 2008. The numbers sharply define the scale and emergency of the issue but at the same time question what ‘justice’ truly means for victims and survivors.

2) Arpan‘s Rescue and Remedy documents their work with rescued minors living in institutions. The process of change has been documented in case studies, statistics, best practices, how-tos and to-dos. The resulting document is both meticulous and approachable.

Feel Inside & Stuff Like That

There was a time when Kiwi musical comedy group Flight of the Conchords was the freshest, funniest and most joyous acts in the world. When asked to compose a song for a medical charity that works for children, the group did the righteous thing by deciding to get the children directly involved. The result is a masterpiece of child participation and the best charity song ever.
