[11 May] Invitation to The 1st Edition of ‘POCSO On the Ground’

unnamed

On 11 May, 2015, Aarambh cordially invites you to the first edition of ‘POCSO On The Ground’, an interactive discussion series that aims to bring to light the successes and challenges of working with POCSO and collectively addressing some of these challenges.

The law on Protection of Children from Sexual Offences that all of us advocated for and worked towards has completed over two years of coming into effect. The law is strikingly comprehensive, stringent and yet keeps the best interest and well-being of the child at heart, a landmark legislature.

Two years of working with POCSO has made all of us realize that it is the systems and mechanisms that now need to catch up. We have spent the last two years doing just that, in our own way, in our own spaces. We have used every resource at our disposal – from sheer grit to innovation. Some of our efforts have have worked while others have not.

These varied first hand experiences from across the sector are at the heart of the first edition of ‘POCSO On The Ground’. We will listen to voices from civil society groups that have worked closely with the health sector, police, courts, children and families. Their experiences in case management are key to understanding how they work with the law and what aspects they find difficult to work around. The on-ground evidence can be used as solid basis for future advocacy.

Through this platform, we want to facilitate an interactive discussion on some of the challenges and the not-so-clear aspects of POCSO like Mandatory reporting, age of consent, role of the support persons among several others.

One of the intended outcomes of the first edition of ‘POCSO On The Ground’ is to form a working group that will continue to look at the law, its implementation and challenges on a regular basis.

POCSO can only work if the systems mentioned in the law and the processes of us humans can function in harmony.

To put it simply – together we can get it done!

Do join us.
