[27 March 2020]The Coop: Does Encryption Endanger Children?
It’s been 2 years since our last newsletter
and that is unforgivable. So we did the inevitable and went in for a name change. Welcome to The Coop.
While we are all roosting in one of our own, we hope that you and all your loved ones are safe, sound & social distancing. These are strange times and we wish you fruitful work from homes, sufficient bandwidth, paid leaves, robust supply chains, kindness of whoever you are stuck with, a zen balance in the mind, quick development of vaccines – basically a full thali of wholesome Go Corona Go.
We felt it’s as good a time as any to put together a weekly missive on relevant issues & resources. We will try and limit pandemic related content as far as possible and address other issues that we need to keep our eyes on.
We start edition one with a piece on the debate on encryption & child rights, especially in the light of the Huffington Post’s #SurveillanceNation Reports. Also, we have a new podcast for you to tune into.
The good people at CCL & Enfold have put together a timely list of recommendations to keep children & staff of Child Care Institutions safe during the pandemic. And finally, as memories of conferences past take on a nostalgic hue, we suggest an upcoming webinar for those interested.
The Encryption Debate
Choosing Safety Over Privacy, Vice Versa or Both Together
Since 2019, there has been an increasing opposition from governments and activists advocating with tech companies to cease & desist from making their platforms encrypted citing harm to children as one of the primary reasons. However there are other civil society voices who claim that encryption is the last resort for online privacy. But does there have to be trade off between privacy and safety. Must they not exist together. The blog is an attempt to put recent events in perspective.
