The State of Child Protection in The State of Maharashtra
‘4 Years Since POCSO: Unfolding of the POCSO Act in the State of Maharashtra’ is the first research of its kind in scale and scope.
And as the nation debates on how best to keep children safe, this on-ground reality check that covers 17 districts – from metropolises to marginalized districts, interviews 147 respondents across 7 key stakeholders. (Police, PPs, JJBs, CWCs, DCPUs, Hospitals, CSOs) – has rich data to offer on what needs to be done. Both long term & post-haste.
The study highlights not just gaps in infrastructure and awareness around the law, but chronicles the attitudinal landscape within child protections systems in the State. It shows that the foundation of child friendly systems is, in fact, the creation of child friendly individuals who people these systems.
The Study illustrates how it is not tenable to use cities as synecdoche for the State. It highlights voices and initiatives from rural and interior regions where the nature of challenges are distinct, more acute and most urgent.
At Prerana’s Aarambh India Initative, putting together our first research under Dr. Pravin Patkar with the support of Pooja Kandula, has been an illuminating process. We are proud to share with you the complete final research report with sections focusing on the gaps in the text of the law, stakeholder-wise analysis, key findings, recommendations and a special focus on POCSOA trainings.
